Professor Rafiqul Gani joined the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in 1986 as assistant professor, where in 2000, he was appointed a professor in Systems Design. Professor Gani graduated with BSc (Chem Eng) from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1975. During the period 1976-1980, he studied at Imperial College in London, where he obtained the MSc (Chem Eng), DIC and PhD degrees. His PhD-thesis was on "Crude oil characterization and distillation dynamics", which was carried out under the supervision of Professor R.W.H. Sargent. Professor Gani spent the period 1980-1985 at PLAPIQUI in Argentia as a senior reseacher and during 1985-1986, he was a visiting researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering (KT) at DTU.

Professor Gani’s principal research interest is the use of a systems approach to solving problems in process and product synthesis, design and analysis. In particular, his research covers the development of systematic (computer aided) methods and tools for solving problems from the petrochemical, chemical, specialty chemical, agrochemical, food and pharmaceutical industries, which can be classified in terms of the following topics:

• Modelling (chemical processes and their operations, chemical products and their behaviour/properties)
• Synthesis, design and analysis of chemical products and their processes (CAMD and CAFD)
• Process integration (sustainable process design)
• Tools integration and software architecture

Professor Gani currently holds the following positions:

• Editor-in-Chief of Computers and Chemical Engineering journal.
• Series Edtior for Computer Aided Chemical Engineering book series of Elsevier Science B. V.
• Vice President (Science) of the EFCE (European Federation of Chemical Engineering)
• Fellow of AIChE
• Fellow of IChemE
• Member (and past chairman) of the EFCE working party on CAPE (Computer Aided Process Engineering)
• Member (and past chairman) of EURECHA (European Committee for Use of Computers in Chemical Engineering Education)
• Member (and past Chairman) of the PSE Executive Committee

Professor Gani has published more than 150 peer reviewed journal articles, more than 100 reviewed conference papers, 5 edited books and has made more than 200 conference presentations as invited plenary, keynote, oral and/or poster presenter. He has also given invited lectures/seminars at numerous companies and academic institutions and has organized several workshops on topics related to CAPE/PSE. He is the 14th Professor Roger R W H Sargent Lecture on "Models, Modelling and Process Systems Engineering - What Next?", at CPSE, Imperial College, London (lecture given on 6th December 2007). In 2010, Professor Gani won the EFCE award for Recent Innovative Contribution in CAPE. By 31st December 2011, 42 PhD-students had submitted and/or successfully defended their PhD-theses under the supervision of Professor Gani.
