PhD Level Course on "Process-tools Integration"

# The 19 Sep 2012.

The PhD level course ”Process and Tools Integration” took place at CAPEC from the 12-19 September, 2012. The course lecturers were Dr. Jeff Siirola from Purdue University, West Lafayette IN, USA, from the 12-14 September and Dr. Zdravko Kravanja from the University of Maribor, Slovenia, from the 17-19 September.

The entire course consisted of six (6) days of lectures. The first three (3) days consisted of lectures based on ”Process Synthesis Review” inclusive of ”Process Synthesis and Design”, ”The Integration of Process Design and Control Systems Design” and ”Outlook And Challenges” with respect to process synthesis from an industrial perspective.

The last three (3) days consisted of lectures based on ”Process Synthesis And Optimization” inclusive of ”Heat Integration-A Mathematical Programming Approach”, ”MINLP Synthesis of HEN Networks” and ”Simultaneous Optimization (Design)/Synthesis And Heat Integration”.

The course was attended by both in house (the DTU) and visiting PhD and MSc students and provided ample food for thought and application with respect to ”Process Synthesis, Design And Optimization”, for the students. Highlights of the course can be seen below.

ANQUE ICCE-2012

# The 15 Jul 2012.

On the 24-27th June, 2012 Asociación Nacional De Químicos De España (ANQUE) held the 2nd International Congress of Chemical Engineering in Sevilla, Spain. Four persons from CAPEC attended the conference, one faculty (Professor Rafiqul Gani), one PhD (Deenesh K. Babi) and two Master of Science students (Alessandra Pennati and Elena F. Ballesteros).

Head of CAPEC, Professor Rafiqul Gani gave the opening plenary lecture for the conference on Monday 25th. His presentation was entitled ‘A new Paradigm for Chemical Engineering’. The lecture reviewed the current status of chemical engineering as a discipline, the proposals for the third paradigm and discussed if the time for such a paradigm shift has arrived?

The attending students had oral (Deenesh and Alessandra) and poster (Elena) presentations. Deenesh gave an oral presentation based on his PhD thesis entitled ‘Achieving Process Intensification from the Application of a Phenomenon Based Synthesis, Design and Intensification Methodology’, Alessandra gave an oral presentation based on her master thesis entitled ‘Synthesis of Industrial Water Networks’ and Elena gave a poster presentation on her master thesis entitled ‘Separation of Azeotropic Mixtures’. All presentations were well recieved and photos highlighting the conference can be seen below.

Information about ANQUE: ANQUE, the Spain’s leading organization for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering professionals, with over 11,000 members. ANQUE’s main aim is to promote and support professional development in Chemistry and Chemical Technology to move forward professionally and to enrich the world we live in.

CAPEC-PROCESS Industrial Consortium Annual Meeting 2012 - Result of Questionnaires

# The 9 Jul 2012.

The second joint CAPEC-PROCESS Industrial Consortium Annual Meeting 2012 had 90 participants, out of which 32 were member company representatives, 14 were invited guests and the rest were from CAPEC/PROCESS and the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, DTU (including 3 accompanying persons). The response from the questionnaire related to the meeting has now been summarized and can be viewed/downloaded here. We are happy to note that the general level of satisfaction on almost all issues was very high.

A report containing interviews with some of the participants at the meeting is available here.

Please note that our next Annual Meeting will be on 5-7 June 2013 at the Comwell Borupgaard, the location that was praised by all participants.
